Beautiful Town, Beautiful People - Marijke

Marijke is a striking and elegantly poised woman, and as one might suspect has led an interesting life which includes jet setting about the world to exotic locales.

In the 70’s Marijke worked for a short time at KLM Airlines, where she met and ended up marrying her boss Chris. The pair moved to St Maartens, then went to Bangladesh. Marijke loved that they had a staff of five to cook the meals for them and their many guests, certainly a luxury only afforded one in a place like Bangladesh.

Marijke has lived in Summerland since 1999 and has a strong network of friends with whom she plays bridge and shares other interests.

She loves nothing more than a good book and a Beanery cappuccino …. with heaps of foam on top. If you want to hear a story that reads like a good book, just stop and ask about hers’.

Patio pooches

Patio pooches Beanery Café

Dogs are allowed on the Beanery Café patio and often their owners bring them along for coffee. This guy with the attitude sure is cute. Check out the Blue Healer who also made it to the Gallery page - these two are our new favourite patio pooches.

Beautiful town, beautiful people - Ilo

Beanery Cafe customers

Ilo is one of Summerland's beautiful people. Born in Vernon, she is a gentle soul, who says things like "thank you kindly" and she actually means it. Not just thank you, but thank you with kindness heaped on top.

Ilo has lived in Summerland for 61 years. Her late husband John had been one of the original Research Station (PARC) food technologists and later became Head of the Food Processing Section. Thanks to having been married to a food scientist Ilo knows a lot about food. She also knows what she likes and one of those things happens to be an Iris Cream latte at the Beanery Café. And cats. Ilo likes cats.

A full day

Morning coffee in Summerland...

So Bob, on the left says "Everybody knows Dave's married to his tractor. I asked him if the tractor was jealous when he got the dog."

Then Killian on the right pipes up  "Oh did you hear there was an ad in the paper that said 'Looking to find a wife with tractor. Send picture of tractor.'" Ok so that's as old as the surrounding hills. But it's still a good one...

Bob asks Dave what he has to do today. "Well I got to go to the hardware store. Then I got to go to the beer store." Bob says "Jeez Dave, you've got a full day."

PICKERS AND PANINIS

Did you know that the food of choice for the fruit pickers around these parts is Beanery paninis? That's right, the cherry pickers over at Carlson's Carcajou cherry farm, adore paninis from the Beanery. This lovely lot of bohemian, and lively colourful youth who hail from all corners of the earth - come to Summerland with their enthusiasm and wanderlust, and inevitably it takes them to The Beanery where they can indulge their love of delicious paninis.

Beanery owner Piet loved that the guy on the right was so into kitchen utensils and espresso that he turned some into tattoos.

Violinist/Pianist

breila, violinist, pianist and barista

Breila came to the open call for models and talent that was held at The Beanery Café in May. A talented girl, at her very young age, Breila has several students and teaches both piano and violin.

Breila will be auditioning for a prestigious school for gifted musicians this September and is in the process of preparing some difficult pieces by Vivaldi that she will be playing for the school admissions jury. More on that later....

Barista/ Model

Rianne was working at the Beanery when a local wedding planning company asked her to play the love interest to model Chris (also scouted at The Beanery) for a shoot for their new website.

The result was a stunning representation of a passionate Wuthering Heights style romance. Rianne is on the roster for the same model management company and will also be back at The Beanery as a barista this fall!

Beautiful Town, Beautiful People – Chris

For one local model management company, The Beanery has become their central casting area. The owner of the agency recently said “Not a weekend goes by that we don’t find another potential model at the Beanery –  which is why we came up with the campaign Beautful Town, Beautiful People."

The first model scouted at the Beanery for Storyboard Models was Christopher, (above) who came to the Okanagan last September to pick apples at Ron Vollo's Farm. Since joining Storyboard Chris has been in development for a career in modelling and acting.

One of the first gigs that Chris got, was as an underwear model for Sass Boutique, and Blue Sky Guy Underwear out of Vancouver. The poster of him in his undies in the window at Sass, created a bit of a buzz....

Sharon and her early morning baking

Sharon is a beauty who loves clouds in the sky and her job as baker for The Beanery Café. She also prides herself on coming up with new baked goods to add to the cafés' already extensive menu. We are thrilled to have Sharon with us - and she gives a much needed break to Piet who also works the early morning shifts.

Cool cats

beanery-cafe-katya

Katya, a Russian born beauty, was spotted at the Beanery with her husband Cary one summer morning and was asked by Storyboard Models if she would join their stable of models.

Katya and Cary come to the Okanagan to get away from the West Vancouver traffic and noise and had stopped at the Beanery on their way back to the city. Summerland is one of the few areas with a plug-in station for electric cars and they have a Tesla which they wanted to charge up before hitting the Coquihalla highway. Cool cats. Cool car.

Katya is now with Storyboard Models.

Beanery Kudos - Love, love, love!

beanery-cafe-wine-country

No, we don't serve alcohol at the Beanery but many customers stop by after visiting the local wineries. Whether visitor or local, we always love to hear that they are delighted with what we have to offer.

Here are some recent recommendations – thank you, to all of our appreciative customers!

"This was an excellent surprise. We were looking for a great coffee experience and found organic, local coffee beans, brewed well and the plus of very tasty paleo bars to go with the coffee!" – Judy Greenough

"Really a nice place for coffee and goodies in the morning. I had the ham & cheese roll and it will love you to the bone! Helpful, friendly staff but they're not lounging around chatting. I highly recommend The Beanery." – Arne Kesler

"The service here is always friendly and I love that they often have Paleo-friendly baked goods available...." – Natasha Drisdelle

"We love to head to The Beanery Cafe for our daily coffee fix. The home made treats (love the oatmeal/chocolate chip cookies and nut bars) are hard to resist, cappuccinos made to perfection with just the right amount of froth... They work hard at keeping this very busy place clean and neat. The atmosphere is relaxed and comfortable and feels like home! We will be back again and again." – Ming Louie Stein – Apples and Quails B+B
